MACUA WAMUA Advice Office (MWAO) is a non-profit, civil society organisation working with mining affected communities across South Africa. Mining Affected Communities United in Action (MACUA) and Women Affected by Mining United in Action (WAMUA) branches which are located across the country, conduct social audits of mining companies` Social Labour Plans (SLP) and generally hold those in positions of power to account for Human rights violations and exploitative practises. Through our community driven audits, we uncover various forms of abuses and false reporting by mining companies who operate outside of the law with impunity.  As community-based movement, MACUA and WAMUA seek to expose the extensive and systemic corruption through mobilising the public to take a stand against their exclusion and oppression.

MWAO seeks to appoint a Digital and Communications Intern to our team to support our growing Grassroots Media Team.

As a Intern, you will be responsible for playing an important role in the audience development of our social media platforms. Your job is to work closely with the Communications Officer to implement a social media strategy and handle day-to-day operations and community management for our active social platforms. You will be expected to keep track of assigned daily, monthly, and weekly tasks, in addition to any special projects and research required.

To be a successful Intern one must bring the CREATIVITY, ENTHUSIASM and excel at being detail-oriented to manage digital marketing for the organisation, possess time management skills to ensure all tasks are completed on time, communicating with branches, audiences and teammates, and writing compelling content on social media, blogs, websites, and other additional media materials.

Our social media platforms are our main point of engagement with the public and how we report on our social justice work and therefore you are expected to maintain an enthusiastic “can do” attitude at all times when posting online or interacting with the public.

This position involves writing compelling social media content that engages our followers and reflects our vaues and vision; creating content for blogs, websites, newsletters, brochures, and other additional media material; managing our digital footprint across platforms to include writing newsletters, managing subscriptions and audience; and conveying the best practices for social and digital media in strategic planning and implementation.

REQUIREMENTS

Must be able to write a blog expressing our values and vision.
At least one year of writing experience.
Background in writing, marketing, communications, or English.
Ability to show up on weekly team Zoom meetings.
Generally reachable and responsive to team members.
Autonomy and ability to thrive in remote work environments.
Able to self-direct and properly manage one’s time.
Must be friendly, assertive and able to clearly communicate with followers, supporters and stakeholders by phone, video conferencing and email.
Ability to work under high stress and pressing deadlines.
Ability to learn quickly and execute at a high level with speed.
Excellent communication skills and ability to relay ideas clearly.
Able to multitask efficiently and without issues.
Strict attention to detail and cross-checking data.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively using emotional intelligence, de-escalation tactics and apply strong problem-solving skills
